The African American Scouting Camporee was revived in 2008 as a State of Texas camping event meant to provide African American youth an opportunity to fellowship as a group to bring the spirit of Scouting home to their communities. Our culture typically frowns on Scouting as an activity and as a result impacts our participation and advancement in Scouting and the business world. What is not well known and appreciated is our history in Scouting. African-American Troops have existed since 1911 with the first known troop in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In 1916, the first official Boy Scout Council recognized Negro Troop 75 in Louisville, KY. The first unofficially recognized Black Eagle Scout is Edgar Cunningham Sr. receiving his Eagle Award on June 8, 1926. Great risks were taken in order to bring Scouting to African-American communities. Despite the risks, the value of Scouting offered universal benefits for all. The African American Scouting Committee of the State of Texas is focused on creating enrichment programs geared to fulfilling the voids in our community of African American young leaders of tomorrow. Unlike Scoutreach, we are purposefully addressing the community at large to build stronger family bounds between father, sons and the entire family which promotes generational support and leadership in Scouting.
